A Geomatic service is a discipline where the objective is to manage information relative to spatial representations. This calls for a certain scientific approach in order to do the acquisitions, stocking and manipulation of this information.
Geomatic's permits one to represent a geographic reality through a digital representation. When we combine these graphic elements to a descriptive database it is possible to create: road maps, localisation maps specific to one area, tourism maps etc.
This service saw the day of light in 2003 for the MRC of Bonaventure after the need for a mapping service was expressed. The advantages of this service are: flexibility in the elaboration of the maps, a reproduction capability as well as an experimentation aspect and an improved quality of the graphics for digital maps.
The MRC of Bonaventure decided to become a part of SIGAT « Système d'Information et de Gestion en Aménagement du Territoire » under a licence agreement. This was done in order to standardize the information exchanged between different partners. Also, the other objectives include:
- Create a network for sharing information between different organisations that deal with territorial organisation and development of the territory of the MRC of Bonaventure.
- Regroup as much information as possible with regard to the organisation of the territory and development of the general territory of the municipalities of the province.
- To provide the urban planners, municipal inspectors and territorial managers with an easy to use tool that can be used in may ways.
- Insure a functional technological foundation to exchange information, analyse and base decisions relative to the organisation of the territory.
On top of collaborating with other services of the MRC, the geomatic service of the MRC of Bonaventure is capable of answering the needs of the municipalities of the territory. This service has become a staple in decision making process when it comes to the organisation of the territory and urban planning decisions.
